🌡🔥 The first heatwave of 2026 is approaching France: The French Riviera is preparing for a thirty-degree weekend
The French meteorological service (Météo-France) has announced a yellow alert level in several departments: the country is expecting the first significant temperature spike of the season. Starting from the middle of the week, air masses from North Africa will begin to move towards southern Europe, and by Friday, the thermometers will show values significantly exceeding the climatic norms for June.
☀️ Overall picture: summer is in full swing
According to meteorologists, in the central and southern regions, daytime temperatures will reach +30…+35°C, and in some places even higher. But the most unusual aspect is the nighttime temperatures: the thermometer readings will not drop below +20…+22°C. Such warm nights are a classic sign of persistent heat because the air simply does not have time to cool down during the short summer dark hours. This creates an additional burden on the body, especially for the elderly and young children.
⛈ Contrasting start: hail and thunderstorms in the mountains before calm
While the coast is still relatively cool, in the mountainous regions of the Maritime Alps, the weather has already shown its harsh nature. On Monday, powerful downpours with hail occurred at altitudes near La Colmiane and Valdeblore — a typical phenomenon at the beginning of a heatwave, when humid Mediterranean air meets cold masses in the mountains. On Tuesday, the chance of thunderstorms and local precipitation in the highlands remains, however, starting from Wednesday, the influence of the anticyclone will strengthen, the sky will clear, and the rains will retreat.
🌊 The French Riviera: the heat will come with a delay, but thoroughly
This forecast is especially important for the resort region. The sea has not yet warmed up to a comfortable +23°C (the water temperature is currently around +19…+20°C), but the air is already ready for a jump.
According to regional meteorological stations, the following maximum temperatures are expected on the coast by Friday:
Antibes — up to +30°C Nice — up to +31°C Menton — up to +32°C Moreover, thanks to the sea breeze, it may be a couple of degrees cooler right at the water’s edge, but in urban areas without air conditioning, it will feel noticeably stuffier.
🏔 Inland region — even hotter
Once the air masses pass over the coastal hills, they will heat up even more, so the inner valleys and foothills will experience real heat:
in the valleys of the Alpes-Maritimes — up to +34°C in the area of Saint-Martin-du-Var, which is slightly further from the sea, by the weekend, the thermometers may show +36°C This is a classic situation for the south of France: the further from the coast, the more continental the climate, meaning hotter during the day and colder at night, although this time the nights will be warm everywhere.
🌙 Why the heat will feel stronger than usual
Meteorologists are paying special attention to the nighttime factor. Normally in June, nights still give the body a respite, but this time it is expected that the air temperature at 4-5 in the morning will remain at around +20°C and above. In combination with high humidity (typical for coastal areas), this will create a “tropical night” effect, when sleep becomes restless, and the body’s recovery processes slow down. These conditions are particularly dangerous for the cardiovascular system.
💧 Recommendations from authorities and doctors
Local prefectures have already issued guidelines for the population and tourists. The main advice includes:
Avoid being in direct sunlight from 12:00 to 16:00 — during these hours, the UV index reaches extreme values (8-9 out of 10). Drink more water — at least 1.5–2 litres per day, even if you don’t feel like it. Alcohol and coffee only increase dehydration. Ventilate rooms early in the morning and late in the evening, and keep windows closed with darkened curtains during the peak heat. Do not leave children and pets in parked cars — the temperature inside can exceed +50°C in just a few minutes. For tourists planning hikes in the mountains, it is advised to start the routes before sunrise and to always bring water reserves and headgear.
🌊 What does this mean for holidaymakers?
The beaches of the French Riviera will likely be crowded by the end of the week, although the water is still refreshing rather than warm. Nevertheless, the long-awaited sun after a cool May will attract both tourists and locals. Restaurants along the promenades will actively open their summer terraces, and hotels will turn on their cooling systems at full capacity.
Meteorologists are not providing precise forecasts for the next week yet, but the first heatwave, judging by everything, will linger at least until Sunday. So if you are planning a holiday in the south of France — prepare your sunscreens, light clothing, and enjoy the first real summer weekend, but remember to take precautions. Take care of yourself! ☀️🌊
