Summer 2026 is already breaking temperature records on the French Riviera, but this is just the beginning. According to forecasts from Météo France, by 2050, the average summer temperature in the Maritime Alps will rise by 2.6–2.8°C. The Mediterranean is recognized as a “hot spot” for climate change - here, warming is occurring twice as fast as the global average. What does this mean for resorts from Nice to Menton?

The Mediterranean basin is the second fastest warming region after the Arctic. In Nice, where meteorological observations have been conducted since 1959, the average annual temperature is steadily rising: “cool” years disappeared in the 1980s, and anomalies are becoming more noticeable.

The French Riviera will face a triple threat: extreme heat, reduced rainfall, and rising sea levels. Particularly vulnerable are:
- Nice — the urban “heat island” effect will intensify discomfort

Fact: By 2050, the number of days with temperatures above +35°C in Monaco will increase fourfold compared to the 1990s.

The inland areas of the Maritime Alps (Valberg, Isola 2000, Mercantour) will become a natural refuge from the heat. Here is what is forecasted:
- A more moderate increase in temperatures (+1.5–2°C)

“Mountain resorts will get a second wind - the summer season will become as important for them as the winter season,” predicts a representative of the Valberg tourist office.

- Modernising air conditioning systems
- Transitioning to drought-resistant plants in parks
