Cultural Centre in Bio after Reconstruction: a New Space for Art
After 18 months of extensive work amounting to 1.3 million euros, the renovated Espace des arts et de la culture opened in Bio. The building from the 1980s has been completely transformed: it is now more accessible, environmentally friendly, and convenient for visitors. At the grand opening, the memory of the legendary director of the centre, Lilian Valsekki, was honoured, and an alley at the entrance was named in her honour.
🏛 From Bungalows to a Modern Centre
The history of the cultural centre in Bio began over 40 years ago with two modest bungalows housing a music school. Today, it is a spacious building with a facade made of natural stone, surrounded by greenery.
- 1980s: first premises on route de Cannes
- 2024-2026: large-scale reconstruction
- Capacity: up to 1000 visitors
“We have preserved the spirit of the place, but made it modern and accessible,” explains architect Corinne Bat from the Epure bureau.
🌿 Eco-Friendly Approach
The reconstruction included the dismantling of asphalt coverings and the creation of green areas with drought-resistant plants. Gardeners Baptiste and Christophe are confident: “In two years, these plants will become fully autonomous.”
- Used: cypresses, agapanthus, sage
- Green area: 1200 m²
- Water savings: up to 40%
♿ Accessible Environment
Special attention was paid to convenience for visitors with reduced mobility. Ramps, wide entrances, and comfortable rest areas have been added.
“A buttress with three modern ‘embrasures’ in the style of the Templars allowed the ramp to be integrated,” explains the architect.
🎭 Plans for the Future
Centre director Olivier Ojé-Laribe is already making plans for expansion:
- Extending opening hours
- New masterclasses and workshops
- Reconstruction of the neighbouring building while preserving historical stones
Mayor Jean-Pierre Dermit confirms: “We will dismantle the old building and build a new one using the same materials.”
💐 In Memory of Lilian Valsekki
The grand opening began with an emotional moment - the unveiling of a memorial plaque in honour of the former centre director, who made a huge contribution to the cultural life of Bio. The alley leading to the centre now bears her name.
