Movies under the Stars: How to Spend a Summer Evening in Cannes and Surroundings
Summer on the French Riviera is not just about beaches and walks along the promenade. In Cannes and neighbouring towns, everyone can enjoy outdoor cinema for free. This year, the Ciné-Quartier program offers unusual locations and films for the whole family, creating a true cinematic celebration.
🏛 Ciné-Quartier: a summer cinema tradition
Ciné-Quartier, a project of the Cannes City Hall and the Cannes Cinéma association, has been delighting residents and visitors of the city with free open-air screenings for the 19th year. This year, the organisers decided to surprise the audience with new locations: in addition to the usual squares of Ruban and de la Castre, films will be shown at Pantiero, in Verdun Square, and in the gardens of the Nouveau Media Library.
📍 New locations: cinema madness in unusual places
Three out of five venues are making their debut in the program this year. Verdun Square, located on the Croisette promenade, offers viewers to sit right on the grass. Beach towels are also provided here. At Pantiero, opposite the Old Port, and in the gardens of the Nouveau Media Library, you can also enjoy films in a cosy atmosphere.
🎥 What to watch: films for the whole family
The program includes recent releases that have been in theatres for less than a year but have already endeared themselves to viewers. All films are suitable for family viewing and are accessible even to the youngest film lovers. In the case of foreign films, dubbing or subtitles are provided, as well as adaptations for the hearing impaired.
“We choose high-quality films that can be enjoyed by the whole family,” explains Delphine Kazan, event director at the Cannes City Hall.
This year’s program includes:
- “Super Mario”
- “Last Chance Project”
- “American Dream”
- “Marsupilami”
- “Jurassic World: Resurgence”
🌿 Cinema on the grass: how it works
An inflatable screen measuring 15 by 9 metres is set up for each session. The venues are equipped with 200 sun loungers and 200 chairs, and in Verdun Square and the Nouveau Media Library gardens, viewers can lie right on the grass lawns.
🎬 Cinema madness beyond Cannes
Outdoor film screenings take place not only in Cannes. In Le Cannet, Mandelieu-la-Napoule, and Pegomas, there is also the opportunity to enjoy films in the fresh air.
In Le Cannet, screenings take place at the Bonnard plateau and at the Tivoli Theatre. In Mandelieu-la-Napoule, sessions are organised at the Robinson Theatre, and in Pegomas, at the J. Marshiv Stadium. Admission to most events is free, but in some cases, a small fee is required.
📅 When to go: show schedule
The remaining screenings will take place on:
- 20th July: “Super Mario” (Ruban Square)
- 27th July: “Last Chance Project” (Pantiero)
- 3rd August: “American Dream” (Verdun Square)
- 10th August: “Marsupilami” (Ruban Square)
- 17th August: “Jurassic World: Resurgence” (Nouveau Media Library)

All sessions start at 10:00 pm, and doors open an hour before the start. Admission is free, but seating is limited.
💡 Cinema in numbers
Last summer, Ciné-Quartier was attended by about 2500 viewers. This year, the organisers hope to break the record of 2019 when 862 people attended the screening of “Bohemian Rhapsody”.
