Revival of the pool in Oron: how the mountain resort above Nice updates aquatic pleasures
After four months of renovation, the pool at the alpine resort Oron is preparing to open. Completely replaced coatings of basins and internal “beach” zones, legal battles with contractors, and rush to the summer season—all this preceded the long-awaited event. Already on July 11, 2026, guests will once again be able to enjoy swimming at an altitude of 1600 meters above sea level.
🏔 Alpine oasis: pool overlooking Mercantour
Oron, located just 90 minutes drive from Nice, has long been a favourite place for those who combine beach holidays on the French Riviera with mountain landscapes. The resort’s indoor pool, built in 2021, was an important part of the infrastructure, but after a few years, it required serious renovation.
Main problems identified in 2026:
- Degradation of basin coatings
- Destruction of internal “beach” zones
- Need for complete replacement of waterproofing
“We faced obvious construction defects,” explains Mayor of Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée, Colette Fabron. “Materials did not withstand the test of time and climate.”
€240,000—this is the cost of emergency works to replace the coating.
⚖️ Legal battles: who will be responsible for poor quality repairs
The story of the pool renovation in Oron turned into a real legal case. The initial works in 2021 were done with violations, leading to a legal dispute between the municipality and the contractors.
The municipality won the case, and now the repair costs will be reimbursed through the contractor’s warranty obligations. This is a rare case where local authorities managed to defend taxpayers’ interests in full.
🏊♂️ What awaits visitors: updated complex
After the renovation, the pool offers:
- Two heated basins
- Relaxation area with sun loungers
- Shallow children’s section
- Panoramic windows with mountain views
“We deliberately accelerated the work to meet the peak of the summer season,” notes the technical director of the complex. “Now the coating is designed for at least a decade.”
July 11, 2026—date of the grand opening after reconstruction.
🌄 Alternatives for water lovers: where else to cool off
While the pool in Oron was closed, tourists and locals could visit other water facilities in the region:
- Natural lake in Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée (open until August 31)
- Waterpark in Nice
- Beaches of Menton and Villefranche-sur-Mer
Interestingly, the water temperature in mountain lakes rarely exceeds 18°C even in the height of summer—a real challenge for the brave!
🏗 Construction history: from reconstruction to complete rebuilding
Initially in 2019, the plan was simply to cover the existing outdoor pool. However, during the design process, it was found that a complete reconstruction was needed, with the budget increasing from €1.8 to €2.5 million.
Stages of transformations:
- 2019: change in concept
- 2020-2021: construction
- 2024: first signs of problems
- 2026: court case and major repair
🗣 Residents’ opinions: disputes about functionality
“The pool configuration is not ideal—there are no proper swimming lanes, shallow depth,” notes Nicolas Fulconis, municipal councilor. “But the main thing is that it is now a reliable structure.”
Local teachers also express wishes for extended hours for school activities, which may be considered in the next season.
📅 Future plans: summer season 2026
The pool will be open daily from July 11 to August 30, from 10:00 to 19:00. The cost of entry remains at the same level as in previous years—€5 for adults and €3 for children.
For those planning frequent visits, a pass for 10 visits for €35 is available. On very hot days, the administration promises to extend the opening hours.
