Police opened fire when detaining a motorist in Cannes

27 June in the city of Le Cannet, near Cannes, police officers were forced to open fire after the driver refused to stop and hit one of the police officers.

Road incident

The collision occurred on the evening of 27 June, when plainclothes police officers stopped a car for inspection. Suddenly, the driver reversed sharply and hit one of the officers who was trying to stop the car. After the policeman fell to the ground, his colleague opened fire, but the motorist managed to escape.

Consequences for the police officer

The injured police officer sustained serious injuries and could not get up on his own. His colleagues and passersby provided first aid at the scene. Later, the police officer was taken to the hospital for further treatment.

Driver’s identity

The motorist was detained sometime after the incident. According to the police, the woman is already known to law enforcement and was recently released from prison. “Without hesitation, she reversed, hit the police car, and continued moving despite the officer lying on the ground,” commented Jean-Luc Bragato, a police union representative.

Growing problem of refusals to stop

This incident was one of several cases of refusal to stop at the request of the police recorded in the country in recent days. The French Ministry of the Interior notes an increase in such incidents, which is causing concern among law enforcement officials.
