In Nice, a scammer stole tourists' personal belongings worth around €100,000
At the AC Hotel Nice by Marriott on Promenade des Anglais on July 17, 2026, an unknown individual pretended to be an employee and deceitfully obtained access to the tourists’ room key.
Incident at the hotel on Promenade des Anglais
Tourists from Ukraine, residing in Germany, arrived at the AC Hotel Nice by Marriott on July 17, 2026. Upon arrival, they encountered a middle-aged man who introduced himself as a hotel employee and offered to help with their luggage.
Key card switch
The scammer, using sleight of hand, was able to discreetly switch the room key card with another. After that, he left the tourists in their room and departed without arousing suspicions.
Return and discovery of theft
When the tourists returned to the hotel around one in the morning, they found that their key card was not working. After they managed to enter the room, they discovered that all their personal belongings were missing. An eyewitness to the incident stated, “Nothing was left.”
Investigation and consequences
Nice prosecutor Damien Martinelli reported that the preliminary damage is estimated at around €100,000. An investigation into the robbery is ongoing, and the victims have already filed reports with the police. The scam was carefully planned and resembles a scheme involving fake drivers.
