Closure of Homeless Aid Centre in Nice during Summer Holidays

Гражданское объединение ViVA! demands that the mayor of Nice, Eric Ciotti, urgently resume the operation of the centre on Dabre Street, where volunteers were helping the homeless.

Closure of the Aid Centre

At the end of June 2026, the Nice City Hall closed the centre on Dabre Street, where several associations were providing assistance to the homeless. According to the authorities, the reason was the insufficient number of volunteers during the summer. However, ViVA! activists claim that this is just an excuse, and the real reason is complaints from neighbours.

Activists’ Reaction

“The argument about the lack of volunteers is invalid,” say ViVA!. “The associations are ready to continue working even in the summer.” The organisation demands the immediate reopening of the centre and the development of a comprehensive assistance programme for the homeless, including access to housing, food, and medical care.

Problem Exacerbated by Heat

The summer heat is particularly harsh for the homeless in Nice. The closure of the centre deprived them of access to water, food, and temporary shelter. Previously, in 2025, the city hall had already banned street food distributions, further complicating the situation.

Political Context

Opposition parties, including environmentalists and socialists, also criticise the actions of the city hall. They call for urgent measures, especially in the face of record temperatures. “The precariat does not go on holiday,” emphasise the activists.
