Mala beach in Cap-d’Ail closed after a water main break

Mala Beach in Cap d’Ail has been closed to visitors since the morning of Monday, 7 September 2026: a rupture occurred in the water supply network. Swimming is prohibited until further notice; the town hall has not yet announced reopening dates.

What happened

On the morning of 7 September, those arriving at Mala saw barrier tape and a notice prohibiting swimming. The Cap d’Ail town hall announced the beach’s closure until further notice on social media, and Nice-Matin wrote about the rupture in the water supply network the same day. The causes of the failure and the timetable for repairs have not been specified.

Who is carrying out the repairs

The work is being carried out by Régie Eau d’Azur — the public water service set up in 2013 and responsible for drinking water in 51 communes of the Nice metropolis, including Cap d’Ail. The beach is supplied by the same networks as the neighbourhoods above the cove, so swimming remains prohibited until repairs are complete regardless of the weather or water temperature.

Mala is the commune’s best-known cove, and it is currently undergoing phased reconstruction: the first stage of the works was completed in time for the 2026 season. Monaco Hebdo wrote in detail about the new layout of the beach and the fate of its restaurants (https://monaco-hebdo.com/actualites/societe/a-cap-dail-la-mala-entre-dans-une-nouvelle-ere/).

Where to go instead of Mala

Within Cap d’Ail itself there remains Plage Marquet at the border with Monaco, slightly to the west — the beaches of Beaulieu-sur-Mer and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. The commune publishes the current bathing status on the “Bord de mer” page of its website. Sudden closures on the Côte d’Azur are not uncommon: in August three Antibes beaches were closed due to a grounded boat.
