Vence museum shows Mémoires de l'eau until 1 November

At the Musée de Vence there is an exhibition until 1 November called “Mémoires de l’eau” — “Memory of Water”: six installations in which water sounds, flows, reflects light and leaves traces. They should be seen in the Château de Villeneuve on the place du Frêne, right by the old town’s fortification wall.

Six installations instead of wall hangings

The exhibition was assembled by curator Mathieu Vabre. Instead of paintings on the walls — six works in which water is shown as an environment that remembers: sound, image, light, movement and technology together reveal the traces that water leaves around us, visible and unseen. Some of the works are designed for the visitor’s participation rather than for viewing from a distance.

Artists — Els Viaene, Hernan Zambrano, Onyo, Moritz Simon Geist, Clément Edouard, Pierce Warnecke and the collective Les yeux d’Argos. The exhibition opened on 27 June and runs until 1 November 2026.

Château de Villeneuve and the Matisse room

The Musée de Vence, also the Fondation Émile Hugues, occupies the historic house Château de Villeneuve at 2 place du Frêne. In addition to temporary exhibitions there is a permanent space here devoted to Matisse: the artist lived in Vence for several years and left the town the Chapelle du Rosaire. On Wednesdays and on the first Saturday of the month the museum opens a digital “Micro-Folie” with reproductions of collections from French museums.

Opening hours

From Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 18:00, Monday closed. Enquiries by phone 04 93 58 15 78. Details — on the website of the Vence town hall and the museum.

This summer Vence has been in the news more often because of the swimming pool closed until 2027, and next door, in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, the Lumière Summit opened at the MAG Foundation in September.
