Intrusion into a children's centre in Nice: prosecutor closes the case

Classical-style building among palm trees in Nice

A man who walked into the Terra Amata school in Nice on 27 July, where a children’s holiday centre operates in summer, was only banned from approaching the building: the prosecutor’s office closed the case, finding no justification of terrorism in his words.

What happened at the Terra Amata school

On the afternoon of Monday 27 July 2026, a stranger entered the Terra Amata school in the port district — through the door, without breaking in and without violence. A leisure centre operates here in summer, where parents bring their children during the holidays. The man came face to face with the headteacher and said he used to come here as a child; she pointed him to the exit. The municipal police, called to the scene, detained him already in the street — and it was there, outside, that he shouted “Allah akbar”, writes Nice-Matin. The police also confirmed the intrusion.

Mayor: “The protection of our children is sacred”

Éric Ciotti, who took office in Nice in March 2026, called the incident an “unacceptable intrusion” in a post on X the same day. “I think of the parents, rightfully shocked. No concessions: the protection of our children is sacred,” the mayor wrote.

Why the case was closed

On Tuesday 28 July, the detained man was brought to the Nice prosecutor’s office — he gave his account to the magistrate via video link. According to the newspaper, the man is in a disturbed mental state. The phrase “Allah akbar” (“God is great”), appropriated by jihadists, is not in itself a crime, so he was not charged with apology for terrorism — only the entry into the school institution remained. The man was banned from coming near the Terra Amata school, and the case was closed on the condition that the ban is respected.

A worrying summer in the city

The issue of security has been present in Nice all summer: in July a man was detained for bomb threats, and the city’s football club honoured the memory of the victims of the 14 July attack.
