Bird migration watching at Fort La Révère near Èze

On Sunday, 30 August, Fort La Révère above Èze is open to the public again: the Alpes-Maritimes department together with LPO PACA (the League for the Protection of Birds) invites everyone to watch the autumn bird migration — from 10:00 to 18:00, free of charge.

What’s happening at the fort

The observation point at an altitude of 675 metres, within the Grand Corniche Natural Park, is one of the best sites in the region for monitoring post-breeding migration. LPO PACA has been watching bird movements here since 2001: a seasonal team of ornithologists and volunteers records migrants and welcomes visitors. This season’s observation post opened on 28 August, and on 30 August there is a family day with free equipment and workshops (HERE).

How many birds fly over the Côte d’Azur

More than 120,000 birds of around a hundred species pass over Fort La Révère each year — they are heading for Africa or Spain. Typical species of the season include the barn swallow, the short-toed snake-eagle, the golden oriole and the chaffinch (LPO PACA).

How to take part

Entry and participation are free, no registration required. Binoculars and spotting scopes are available on site, and LPO ornithologists run workshops on the secrets of migration — interesting for both adults and children.

Caring for birds near the Riviera

Similar attention to feathered friends can be found in neighbouring Monaco — the Princess Antoinette Park there has recently gained new residents («New feathered residents of Princess Antoinette Park»).
