A speed bump installed in Castagniers — residents oppose it

Paved road with a road sign and greenery along the verge

At the end of July 2026 a speed bump appeared on the narrow road leading from Castagniers to Saint-Blaise. Local residents consider it pointless: speeds are already low on this stretch, and the hump itself is placed in a dangerous spot.

Unexpected addition

At the end of July 2026 an artificial hump was installed on the road between Castagniers and Saint-Blaise — a short two-kilometre route in the suburbs of Nice. This “speed bump” caused bewilderment among local residents, who consider it not only useless but potentially dangerous. Castagniers is one of the hilly villages in the suburbs of Nice, where narrow winding roads remain a defining feature of the area.

Residents’ views

Serge, a resident of Castagniers, said he came across the addition by chance: “I was very surprised when I saw it. There are no problems with speed on this road — it is narrow and winding, it’s impossible to pick up speed here.” He also noted that the hump is located in a dangerous place — on a bend where drivers already slow down, and sudden braking before it could lead to an accident.

Official position

According to Jacques Murris, deputy mayor of Castagniers for safety matters, the installation of the hump is aimed at tackling offenders who use this road as a shortcut around the main route (RM1114) to save 3–4 minutes. “Some drivers go here at high speed, despite the prohibitory signs. We hope this measure will make them think,” he explained.

Further plans

The municipality plans to conduct a survey among residents to assess the effectiveness of the new measure in a few weeks. If it turns out that the “speed bump” does not solve the problem, alternative measures will be considered jointly with the metropolis of Nice. Nearby, in Colomars, this summer they already had to deal with a more serious threat — in June a forest fire raged, approaching residential homes. For now local motorists have to get used to the new obstacle on the road.
